What Happens to Your Joints During Menopause?

Many women are surprised when they develop joint stiffness, aching knees, sore shoulders, or general muscle pain during perimenopause. Morning stiffness that takes time to ease, or aches that seem to move from one joint to another, are common complaints.

Why Does This Happen?

Oestrogen has natural anti-inflammatory properties and helps maintain joint cartilage and bone density. As oestrogen declines, inflammation can increase, cartilage may thin, and joints lose some of their cushioning. The result is stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility.

What You Can Do

  • Stay active — gentle, regular movement is the best medicine for stiff joints. Walking, swimming, and cycling are low-impact options
  • Strength training — builds muscle around joints, providing better support. Start light and progress gradually
  • Stretching and yoga — improves flexibility and reduces stiffness. Morning stretches can ease that "rusted" feeling
  • Anti-inflammatory foods — turmeric (haldi), ginger, fatty fish, walnuts, and leafy greens
  • Calcium and Vitamin D — essential for bone health. Get sunlight exposure, eat dairy, ragi, and sesame seeds
  • Maintain healthy weight — excess weight puts additional stress on weight-bearing joints
  • Warm baths or compresses — can provide temporary relief for sore joints
  • Stay hydrated — dehydration worsens joint stiffness

If joint pain is limiting your daily activities, causing swelling, or if you're concerned about bone density — consult a doctor. A bone density scan (DEXA) may be recommended for women in menopause.
